Brexit, Memes of Finance, and the Coliving Revolution
Comments and projects in the age of decentralisation.
Hey friends,
My recent newsletter covered quite a few different topics so I brought in some ONCE symbolism to help map out the sections.
These symbols might not mean much now, but they play an important role in tying the solution and theory of change i'm proposing.
I've actually split this post up so you'll have to keep an eye out for part two 😉
✦ ONCE coliving - where is it now?
▲ Memes in Finance - what did this event reveal?
⚫️ Brexit impacts - cross border community and creativity.
◼️ Tech Trends - is clubhouse worthy of the hype?
⩚ Game B vs Facebook - the changing state of the internet.
Coliving & Community
The coliving project is taking form and I’m massively excited for it's potential.
Been having inspiring conversations recently across areas like events, machine learning, facilitation, group dynamics and permaculture. You can follow my progression via this twitter thread where i'm working in public and i'll be adding clips of conversations to linkedin and instagram.
Below are some of the incredible people I spoke with recently with recommendations or their work below:
Rebecca Collins - Relationship Coach and group dynamic consultant
"People are terrible at sharing their needs and providing for each others needs or rejecting them on their needs."
Marie Paulin - Business and Life systems designer
We spoke about systems thinking, getting traction and creator decisions on niches.
Recommended the book: People and Permaculture
Richard Bartlett - Cofounder of Loomio and The Hum
Suggested the Find The Others fb group and to get in touch with 👇🏻
Part of the Dandelion Collective and creator of dandelion.earth platform that helps run co-created events.
Spoke about the tangible needs of coliving and intentional communities, as well as the considerations around profit and not-for-profit models.
Spoke about the machine learning and data aspects of this project.
"What are the things that connect people and where would you find that out?"
recommended to check out work by Anouk Ruhaak on Data Trusts
I’ve also come across a huge amount of validation around rural coliving. Both in the US and in Europe the trends are the same.
I would highly recommend checking out Nat's post on creator towns as we're on similar wavelengths for this.
Site Launch
The 1st iteration of the site will be going live in the next 2 weeks so follow me on the mentioned platforms or drop your email in this form to see it once it’s live.
How you can help
If anyone comes to mind while reading this who'd be interested in this project please forward on the post as I'm currently looking to build a team and am always open to collaborators and partners getting involved.
But send it round anyway if you resonate as I'd love to help connect together your network that share in this feeling. And if you're reading this you're probably the kind of person i'd want to help.
▲ Meme Finance and the Makers of Narrative
Watching the scene with GameStop recently I found it fascinating to see memes find their way into the financial system.
It really showed an inflection point around how we relate to the financial markets and the power of collective intelligence through these online forums to find opportunities and consensus.
I’m sure the real story has nuance and perhaps other big players were involved, but the way people’s stocks were being sold for them and buying options restricted across multiple brokers, it certainly seemed shady from an outsiders POV.
For those who’d like an overview on what went down I’d recommend this video.
This one is fun but may need some understanding of decentralised financed to fully appreciate.
For those who’d like an overview on what went down I’d recommend this video.
I will be exploring more around corruption in a future video based off a recent article I wrote.
In it I talk about how corruption can be seen in public events and how tech could shape a new overton window.
But what I thought was most interesting in this scenario was the reaction from the media. To me that showed at least some in powerful places got hurt as multiple outlets tried to steer the narrative.
I would love to go deep and study the media response from that moment as I think it’s fairly revealing, but one particular observation I’d like to share with you is how identity politics and white supremacy can be used as a tool in narrative warfare.
I’ve long had suspicions that identity politics was being co-opted in subtle ways to perpetuate old systems and monied interests (though I’m by far not the only one).
But for me this makes a clear case for the protection of free speech and caution around how labels are used, because if mob rule can be swayed by strategic comms this may leave little defence against censorship.
The media scene in this case seemed one of the clearest fights I’ve seen between the centralised vs the decentralised. Broadcast vs P2P.
As Rhys Lindberg points out in his beautiful piece, this will be one battle among many.
⚫️ A Deflated Brexit
For us in the UK these past months have been challenging with the combination of a new strain and brexit at the same time. I put out a video recently breaking down my observations, adaptions and history in relation to brexit what I think it means for the future.
Feel like this video marks the start of the YT journey as I broke the first 100 subscribers (YAY 🥳).
In future videos I’ll be talking about corruption, game B and how creatives are integral to system change.
Keep your eyes peeled for part 2. ◼️ ⩚
Thanks for reading.
